Learning to play in all 12 musical keys will be a great challenge but the long term rewards will increase reputation for your performances and the individual can have a broader range of creating new music. Don’t limit yourself by just playing or creating a song using one key, use different keys so your music can be brilliant and when playing with a singer you can adjust to their voice range. Here are some reasons to learn your music in all 12 keys.
1. Confidence- There is no better feeling then knowing whoever you perform for you can easily pick up on the tone of their voice. Every musician have been at a point in their career where you have to perform on the spot with a singer and have to make a split second decision to decide the proper key to play in.
2. Musical Freedom-Musician rely on the “transpose” button when playing with a group or accompanying a singer to change the key of the song automatically. The benefit of learning all 12 keys is that you will no longer have to rely on the “transpose” feature and you could create and play music as you feel without being limited.
3. Leadership- If you are trying to achieve a position of music director or a church pianist you must have the skills and knowledge to get different instruments tuned properly. You must acknowledge that the “C” note on the piano comes out different than the “C” on a guitar or saxophone. Sometimes when playing in an environment that only requires one person, you could get away with it, but when trying to direct a full music group you have to be able to live up to the task.
4. Adaptability-If you only play using the flat keys on the piano or rely on muscle memory to play a song, your finger will get used to playing that specific pattern. Certain keys require the use of all 10 fingers and when you play a complex song that involves multiple key changes, knowing your keys will make the playing experience easier.
